To locate and purchase only the best caravans available for their age. We have contracted a local UK caravan expert to buy and locate caravans for us. His name is Alan Cashmore.
Alan has owned caravans for over 35 years, his first caravan was an Eccles Moonstone 1970 model, way before fridges, cassette toilets, and hot water were available, though they still provided a great way to get away from the city and enjoy the countryside with his young family.
In 1991 he embarked on his first overseas trip, and 8 week soiree to Istanbul, over 2000 miles. Traveling through France, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria to Istanbul in Turkey. Whilst traveling through Romania the dictator Ceaucescu was toppled, causing massive problems including spending 2 days at the border to get in and two days at the border to get out of the country having to bribe the border guards, though with a caravan the hardship was manageable. On his return trip he and his family were subject to serious problems, delays and incidents as war broke out in former Yugoslavia.
Nowadays he lives a more peaceful life in Bournemouth on the south coast of England scouring the country for quality touring caravans to export down to Watts Autos.
In February 2008, Alan came down to NZ to spend a few weeks touring the North Island in a caravan of course, but the main reason for his visit was to get a feel for what our wants and needs are, and as Alan said this trip was invaluable for him to understand what we require down here in NZ.
Alan has a real understanding of caravans and when he finds one that sounds like what we require he personally inspects it, testing all equipment and also using a device called a protimeter which he uses to detect any damp or moisture in the interior of the caravan. If damp is found then we walk away from it. Alan sometimes will inspect 5 or 6 vans before he is satisfied that it is the condition that we demand.
Upon the purchase of the caravan, Alan then takes them home to prepare them for shipping to NZ. This involves removing of some lights and trimmings and covering the windows with protective coating to avoid scratches. He then delivers them to the docks where they are loaded into containers for shipping to NZ.
Upon arrival in NZ which takes about 6 - 8 weeks they go through the normal thorough MAF inspection.
Once we have collected the van in Auckland and have brought it back to Whangarei we go through the van from one end to the other, checking all equipment, fitting new gas bottle, changing all electrical 3pin plugs and obtaining a NZ electrical certificate. We also shampoo all the fabric and carpets in the van and thoroughly clean all surfaces, inside and out.
So all in all it is our intention to offer our customers the peace of mind that we have taken all steps possible to only import the best, hence our motto "Satisfaction Guaranteed".
